Up and Down Like A Yo-Yo

This weekend on the virtual felt was like riding a roller coaster. Up $30-40 one session, then down an equal amount the next. I'm playing more and more limit poker, despite telling myself I shouldn't do so unless I have time for 100 hands minimum. But the funny thing is I've been making the most money with quick, in-and-out hit-and-runs lately. I log into a $1/2 game, make a quick $10-15 score, and then get out before the poker gods discover I'm playing again.

In related news, I've been re-reading Peter Alson's book "Take Me To The River." It's the story of him playing in the 2005 WSOP while simulaneously prepping for his upcoming nuptials. The first time I read it, I was mildly disappointed (probably because I had just read McManus' great WSOP read, "Positively Fifth Street" and most poker books would pale in comparo). This time with Alson's book, however, I really enjoyed the prose. Perhaps part of it was I didn't know enough subtleties of the game to fully appreciate it the first time? Dunno. In any case, it was fun to vicariously live through his ups and downs in the tourneys he plays in Vegas while his wife-to-be waits for him back east. He describes the feeling of losing in a tournament perfectly-- that deer in the headlights, I'm-dead?-you're-sure?-the-board-didn't-hit? awful, empty, numb feeling.

He also describes Dutch Boyd's idea of the Perfect Path through a tournament. Alson dismisses the idea of playing a tournament perfectly, with zero risk to your stack ever occuring because you've taken the perfect route throug the minefield. I'm not so sure. In fact I'm not so sure I want to think there ISN'T a perfect path, and that I just haven't yet discovered the way to find it... Ah, screw it; too Zen for tonight.

I just busted out of the second $6 turbo NL SnG in a row and need to fuhgedaboutit. Oh, before I sign out, the good news tonight is I tuned in just in time to watch Bret take third in a 45-person multi. Way to go, G!

All-in for now....
