Back in the Saddle

Been a while since I posted here. Life, work, family has all conspired in the past few months to keep me from taking poker all that seriously. I’ve been playing, of course, but not reading and writing as much as I would have liked to do. Nor have I played as seriously as I would like. Fortunately, things have calmed down again, and just maybe I can start posting more regularly. In the meantime, here’s a short update on things.

When we last left our hero over a month ago, YIPES had sputtered to a halt with essentially zero in the PS bankroll. That left me with ~$400 on FTP in the ‘roll. Unfortunately, I ran into a series of long, horrible losing jags on the site (coupled with some bouts of tilt thrown in for good measure). As a result, our hero’s bankroll on FTP took a nose dive all the way down to $170 as of a few weeks ago.

That’s the bad news. The good news is…. uh, well, there really isn’t any major good news to report. The so-so news, however, is that I’m slowly grinding the FTP ‘roll back up, a few bucks at a time. As of this afternoon, I’m sitting at $230. I’m trying to be fairly serious with the effort, playing $.25/.50 and $.50/1.0 limit, but I’ve occasionally lost my mind and played $1/2 limit. I’ve also dabbled with stud hi/lo a bit (I’m still CONVINCED that the game is beatable, but I have to take it a lot more seriously that I have been). Yesterday, I lost $5 at stud, but today, I won back $5.50.

I’ve also been trying to teach myself Omaha recently. I spent a few sessions on the play money tables just to get the mechanics down, and today I took the plunge and played 30 hands of 5/10-cent pot-limit. I bought into a 9-handed table for just $2 to limit my losses. The very first hand I was dealt AK87 double-suited, which is not an exceptionally great starting hand, but not unplayable eiter. Didn't really matter, because at this point in my game I’m just trying to figure out the game, so I joined the limpede of 6 players that saw the flop. After the first three cards were dealt, the board gave me a weak open ended straight draw. Again, not great, but I chased anyway. I got a lot of action from one guy throughout the turn and river. He ended up turning over a set of aces. My straight never got there, but I did go runner-runner for the nut flush and took down a $5 pot. A few hands later, I took another $3 pot off the same guy.

The opp hurled a ton of expletives my way after the first hand, calling me a donkey and an idiot for chasing, blah, blah, blah. He really went ballistic after the second pot I “stole” from him. The funny things was that I answered back that I was sorry and was, in fact, a newbie donkey. I explained that it was my first time playing, etc. He called me more names in response, so I gave up. A few hands later I took down another decent sized pot from another guy, who then started calling me a liar. Someone else came to my defense, and then another person joined in the bar fight. Within five minutes, a third of the table was calling me a “pro” or a “liar,” another third continued to berate me for my incredibly poor play, and a couple of the other players started explaining the rules of omaha to me, along with some pretty good advice on reading the board. It was pretty damn funny, plus I could laugh even louder as I pocketed a nice win of $9 for the short session. Craaazy.

The only other poker news to report is the www.wrgpt.org tourney has begun. I talked Bret into also playing the year-long tourney by email, aka the Glaciers Attack Canada game. In the course of this first week of play, my table has gotten through 4 hands thus far, while Bret’s has only gotten 2 hands played out. I’m currently in the middle of the fifth hand at my table, which is an interesting 5-way hand where I flopped middle set. Hopefully by the next time I post here I will explain how I took the pot down…. Hopefully.

Gotta run....
All-in for now…
