Patience, Grasshopper

Finally made a few bucks at the tables today. It's felt like ages since I posted any significant wins, what with my luck-o-meter being pegged at zero for the past 1.5 months. Today, when I started out, I figured things were going to be no different. In fact, they weren't for the first 1000 hands (a lot of multi-tabling, obviously; see the graph, below), but toward the end of the my two hour session I finally started getting some traction.

The funny thing is that most of the money I made wasn't due to me doing anything particularly brilliant, but instead was because the opp made fundamental mistakes. I was just playing ABC poker and waiting for opportunities to arise. In other words, patience paid off. Take the following hand as an example. I was making a by-the-book SB steal move with T9o, and the opp min-3bet me from the BB, which priced me in at 4:1. At those odds, I would be justified calling with nearly any two cards. If he'd raised 3-4x PF instead, I would certainly have folded my hand, which was a non-suited connectors and I was out of position (OOP). As it were, he let me see a cheap flop and, as they say, the rest is history.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (6 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Hero (SB) ($10.61)
BB ($10.77)
UTG ($9.90)
MP ($12.19)
CO ($10)
Button ($7.53)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 9, 10
4 folds, Hero bets $0.30, BB raises to $0.50, Hero calls $0.20

Flop: ($1) J, Q, 8 (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $0.30, Hero raises to $1.80, BB raises to $3.30, Hero raises to $10.11 (All-In), BB calls $6.81

Turn: ($21.22) 3 (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($21.22) 5 (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $21.22 | Rake: $1.41

Results:
Hero had 9, 10 (straight, Queen high).
BB had A, A (one pair, Aces).
Outcome: Hero won $19.81

As you can see in today's graph, the 'ole luck-o-meter took a big swing upward after that hand, with me cashing in on a number of subsequent hands, including a set of threes for a big pot, along with a couple of two pair and a nice nut flush that paid off against a maniac. Gee, I like poker again.

All-in for now...

  1. Hmmm, cracking A's, instead of having your pocket A's cracked. A nice turn of events. :-)
