Cracked Nuts

Poker is masochism at its finest. S&M practitioners apply here. Want pain? Boy, have you come to the right place. Just pull up a seat and say, "Deal me in!" The hurt is just a few minutes away and you won't be disappointed. Anna is just waiting to get her hands on you...

The last few days on the virtual felt have been awful, truly awful. Surprisingly, I'm accepting it pretty well (mainly because I don't think I could have played any better than I have), but still it stings. Actually, it stings a lot. Worse, almost every time I lost a significant amount of money, it was with me holding a really strong hand that got sucked out on or was beaten in a well disguised manner. This can be such a friggin' cruel game. Here's a rundown of my last five SnG losses (and yes, I'm sorry for the "bad beat" nature of this post, but what can I say? This is how the last few days playing have gone…)

First game, I pick up AA three hands into the tourney. I raise 3xBB, get a re-raise, I re-raise and the opp smooths. He's a tight aggressive, so I figure his hand is real. Flop is K-8-2 rainbow. I bet, he pushes, I call and lose to K-K-K.

Second game, on the bubble, I pick up KK. Get all my money in against a slightly shorter stack who turns over AA. Next hand I bust out.

Third game, middle level blinds with about three players gone. I get dealt QQ. Flop comes J-T-K. I smooth call a min bet. Turn is an ace and I get all my money into the middle with my nut straight, only to see the river 3-flush the board and knock me out of the tourney.

Fourth game, I pick up JJ and raise big on a flop of J-Q-8. The opp runner-runners a straight and knocks me out of the tourney.

Game this afternoon at lunch. I get dealt TT with five players left. Board is a bunch of lower rags than my over pair. I take a beating with the rivered set that a loose goose sucker punches me with.

Note that I died with AA, KK, QQ, JJ, and TT. What's next? 99? I'm almost afraid to get dealt a pair of nines now. Yikes. The only thing that kept me semi-afloat was some wins at 10/20-cent limit, except I even took a beating at that this afternoon after busting out of my SnG. I think I lost an additional $3 in about thirty minutes. Damn.

Finally, to add insult to injury, I lost in the MPT on Wednesday night. I was playing under the Guru's account again and made it to the final table… but just barely, dying in 8th place. Going back thru my PT stats confirms what it felt like at the time: I was card dead. No, make that CARD DEAD. In 78 hands, the best two cards I was dealt was 77. Never got any ace bigger than a eight offsuit. Never even picked up Anna, suited or not. It was a miracle I lasted as long as I did. When I finally died, it was with an M of 3 and I pushed with the aforementioned A8o UTG, as the blinds were about to swallow me up. Of course I ran into a pair of KK that held up and I was done. Arhgh.

Bottom line: this game can feel like a self-inflicted mugging at times. But of course I'm going to wander on back down that dark alley again tomorrow and take my chances. What else are you gonna do? Anna in leather is a siren. Get used to it.

All-in for now…
