A Big Piece of Pisa

[WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SCENES OF UGLY BEATS, HEINOUS SUCK-OUTS, AND PITIFUL WHINING. CHILDREN AND OTHERS THAT ARE SENSITIVE TO SCENES OF HORRIFIC POKER ARE URGED TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL AND/OR LOOK THE OTHER WAY.]

And so my bad-luck-o-meter results continue. Here are five (of many, similar) hands from Sunday. I started at $25NL 6max and slowly dropped down in stakes, looking for some kind--any kind--of traction. I actually made a few bucks in the evening by the time I was at $5NL, but it didn't even come close to making up for the day's earlier losses. Anyway, here's just a sample of how crappy I've been running lately:

Hand #1:
Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (5 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

BB ($16.86)
Hero (UTG) ($34.83)
MP ($13.10)
Button ($22.54)
SB ($25)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with K, K
Hero bets $0.85, 1 fold, Button calls $0.85, 1 fold, BB calls $0.60

Flop: ($2.65) Q, 2, 4 (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $1.75, 1 fold, BB raises to $3.50, Hero raises to $13.15, BB raises to $16.01 (All-In), Hero calls $2.86

Turn: ($34.67) J (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($34.67) A (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $34.67 | Rake: $1.73
Main pot: $34.67 between BB and Hero, won by BB

Results:
BB had Q, A (two pair, Aces and Queens).
Hero had K, K (one pair, Kings).
Outcome: BB won $32.94

Yes, I got married to a big over-pair, but the BB was a 50/30/5 player who went nuts whenever he hit any part of any flop on previous hands. Per Pokerstove, I was a 75:25 leader preflop and a 73:26 leader on the flop. In other words, I was way ahead when the money went in, but my luck-o-suck-o-meter-crap-o continued for me...

Okay, on to Hand #2:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (8 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

MP2 ($39.18)
Hero (CO) ($31.86)
Button ($29.98)
SB ($25)
BB ($4.90)
UTG ($8.67)
UTG+1 ($17.86)
MP1 ($27.40)

Preflop: Hero is CO with K, A
BB bets $1, 4 folds, Hero calls $1, 1 fold, SB calls $0.75

Flop: ($3) 6, 9, A (3 players)
SB bets $1.50, BB raises to $3, Hero calls $3, SB raises to $7, BB calls $0.90 (All-In), Hero raises to $30.86 (All-In), SB calls $17 (All-In)

Turn: ($54.90) 8 (3 players, 3 all-in)

River: ($54.90) K (3 players, 3 all-in)

Total pot: $54.90 | Rake: $2.74
Main pot: $14.70 between Hero, SB and BB, won by SB
Side pot 1: $40.20 between Hero and SB, won by SB

Results:
SB had 9, 9 (three of a kind, nines).
BB had 6, 6 (three of a kind, sixes).
Hero had K, A (two pair, Aces and Kings).
Outcome: SB won $52.16

Yes, I was behind pre-flop, but on the flop I had Top pair, Top Kicker and had no indication I was up against two sets (both players were borderline maniacs). I also had a backdoor flush draw that improved on the turn, and then of course I made top two pair on the river... and still lost. Even though this one wasn't technically a bad beat, it still stung. Arghg. I decide then and there to drop down to $10N.

So, moving on to Hand #3:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (6 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Hero (BB) ($10.15)
UTG ($6.78)
MP ($17.42)
CO ($10)
Button ($10)
SB ($2.19)

Preflop: Hero is BB with J, J
1 fold, MP calls $0.10, 1 fold, Button bets $0.45, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.35, MP calls $0.35

Flop: ($1.40) 7, J, 2 (3 players)
Hero checks, MP bets $1.40, Button calls $1.40, Hero raises to $3.90, 1 fold, Button raises to $9.55 (All-In), Hero calls $5.65

Turn: ($21.90) 10 (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($21.90) K (2 players, 1 all-in)

Total pot: $21.90 | Rake: $1.46

Results:
Button had 9, 8 (straight flush, Jack high).
Hero had J, J (three of a kind, Jacks).
Outcome: Button won $20.44

I probably made a small mistake not re-raising PF, but the player was pretty loose and wasn't going anywhere. Pokerstove says I was 80:20 to win preflop, and still had a 2:1 advantage on the flop when I hit my set and got the money in. Arghgh. Why me?

Hand number four:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (6 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

MP ($10)
CO ($9.25)
Button ($10.65)
Hero (SB) ($10.08)
BB ($2.59)
UTG ($5.78)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 8, 8
3 folds, Button bets $0.30, Hero calls $0.25, 1 fold

Flop: ($0.70) 10, 8, 10 (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

Turn: ($1.50) A (2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks

River: ($1.50) A (2 players)
Hero bets $1.50, Button raises to $4, Hero calls $2.50

Total pot: $9.50 | Rake: $0.63
Main pot: $9.50 between Button and Hero, won by Button

Results:
Button had 2, A (full house, Aces over tens).
Hero had 8, 8 (full house, eights over Aces).
Outcome: Button won $8.87

Flopped the full house and still lost. Again, I had a big 70:30 advantage preflop, that improved to an amazing 99:1 advantage on the flop! And still I LOST! It's amazing I wasn't tilting like the tower of Pisa at this point.

And, just to add insult to injury, here's hand number 5, which happened immediately after hand number 4, above, and was another set of eights for me:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (8 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

CO ($2.02)
Button ($5)
Hero (SB) ($5)
BB ($0.35)
UTG ($2.77)
UTG+1 ($10.11)
MP1 ($8.62)
MP2 ($5.70)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 8, 8
UTG calls $0.05, 1 fold, MP1 bets $0.15, 2 folds, Button calls $0.15, Hero calls $0.13, 2 folds

Flop: ($0.55) 8, 4, Q (3 players)
Hero bets $0.35, 1 fold, Button calls $0.35

Turn: ($1.25) 6 (2 players)
Hero bets $0.55, Button raises to $1.10, Hero raises to $4.50 (All-In), Button calls $3.40 (All-In)

River: ($10.25) 4 (2 players, 2 all-in)

Total pot: $10.25 | Rake: $0.25
Main pot: $10.25 between Button and Hero, won by Button

Results:
Button had 4, 4 (four of a kind, fours).
Hero had 8, 8 (full house, eights over fours).
Outcome: Button won $9.95

Again, I was far ahead preflop (80:20), way ahead on the flop (96:4), and even further ahead on the turn (98:2), but of course I still lost. Will my luck ever change? This crap has been going on for nearly two months now, and I can't seem to get it to turn around. I've heard of prolonged losing streaks, but this is just plain getting ridiculous.

All-in for now...

  1. I came across this on a piece on Bankroll Management that I think describes your current situation:
"Poker is and will forever remain a high variance game. All you have when you go all-in with the best hand that isn’t a lock is a chance to win. Sure, it may be a big chance to win, but it’s still only a chance. There is nothing that impedes the wrong end of the chance, as in the opponent hitting, to happen. It can also happen consecutively and there is always the risk of going broke. Sometimes, it will feel as if Lady Luck has completely turned her back on you, and introduced you to her cousin Mr. Misfortune."
