When Will I Ever Learn?

Had some success in some SnGs yesterday…BUT I gave all of it back in limit. When will I learn? I tried to sneak a quick twenty hands in right before I left work for home in the evening, and it bit me on the ass. Playing limit requires a certain calm, focused attitude that is not compatible with the hey-I’ve-got-twenty-minutes-to-get-in-a-quick-bit-of-poker mentality.

Don’t get me wrong; I can play limit ring games fairly well and have posted a net gain of ~2BB/100-hands over the past year or so. But looking at my records, the biggest bankroll meltdowns I’ve experienced have invariably been with limit cash games. And, more importantly, they’ve almost always come when I’ve tried to “squeeze in” some poker when I've got a few minutes to spare. Last night was no exception. I lost a quick $20 when my two pair fell to a bright as the sun Broadway straight. Worse, I was so focused on my two pair that I never even saw the straight possibility. I can almost guarantee that I would have recognized I was beaten if I hadn’t been trying to play such a quick hit-and-run session.

The only good news is that my SnG wins almost—-not quite, but almost—-made up for the cash game loss. Sigh.
